Even a limited war would cause a ruinous global economic crisis, necessitate the dispatch of huge US armed forces to Europe, and destroy for the foreseeable future any chance of serious action against climate change. A full-scale conventional war would have the strong potential to escalate into nuclear war and the annihilation of most of humanity. The consequences of a direct US-Russian clash in Ukraine would be catastrophic. But as the outbreak of World War I demonstrated, leaders who do not intend to go to war may stumble into a situation in which they are unable to stop or turn back. Only the most insane of US politicians and commentators actually want to go to war with Russia in Ukraine. On the other hand, the political humiliation suffered by the Biden administration could lead it to try to recover its domestic and international prestige by responding recklessly to Russian actions. America’s defeat in Afghanistan could lead Russia (and China) to act more recklessly, just as America’s defeat in Vietnam emboldened the ambitions of the USSR in Africa and Central America.

From the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, to the current Massachusetts Speaker of the House, Mac made an impact on countless individuals who remember him today.Īs a city, we are proud of all that Mac was able to accomplish, from his roots in the Germantown neighborhood, to the accolades he consistently gathered at Quincy High School, Deerfield Academy, and Harvard University. The Taliban victory may create a new and perilous dynamic. We became quickly aware that, despite this investment, a digital divide remained as many families lacked the appropriate bandwidth for the connectivity to support remote learning. In the midst of the pandemic, the city invested heavily in Chrome books for our students to ensure continuity in learning. This piece of land is contiguous to the 80-acre tract known as Merrymount Park which was gifted to the City of Quincy by Charles Francis Adams II in 1885 and remains the gem of the City’s park system due to its versatility: from waterfront vistas and trails, to baseball and softball diamonds, to a municipal stadium, to passive recreation and outing facilities. Concepts have evolved from naming a field, to the Quincy High School gymnasium, to the development of “The MAC” or McDermott Activities Center.Ī 4.4-acre parcel of land owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and adjacent to Veterans Memorial Stadium – where Mac was a standout on both the football and track teams – has become available and offers tremendous potential to site an opportunity center for the youth of the City of Quincy. Some time ago, a few of Mac’s local friends and teammates approached me with the goal of honoring him in a meaningful way. I write to you today to present a project that seeks to honor an individual whom I have learned was near and dear to you, Robert “Mac” McDermott.
